Use of general CHPC interactive nodes
Date Posted: May 3, 2016
In January we sent a reminder about CHPC policy on the acceptable usage of the general (i.e., not group owned) cluster interactive (login) nodes (https://www.chpc.utah.edu/news/latest_news/2016_jan/20160119.php) and mentioned that we were developing a script that had would identify and log processes that were in violation of this policy, and then automatically email users when this occurred.
Up to now we have been testing the script, with emails only going to CHPC staff, sometimes followed by staff killing process(es) and reaching out to users via email. We are now ready to have the emails sent directly to the user. There are two levels of messages users will recieve, which can easily be identified by their subject lines:
- The first message has the subject line “WARNING: Potential Violation of Usage Policy on HOSTHAME” . In this message there is a sorted list of all processes you are running on the host; users should use this message to identify and kill processes that are against the stated usage policy.
- The second has the subject line “ALERT: Interactive task might be killed on HOSTNAME”. In this message the process in violation of the usage policy is typically flagged with a leading ‘à’. Users should either kill the flagged process(es) or if they are uncertain of why the process is being flagged contact us via issues@chpc.utah.edu. This message will also go to CHPC staff and we will kill the processes without further notification to the user when appropriate.
If you receive a message regarding your usage and have any questions on why your usage is being flagged or if you believe that one or more of the processes should not have been flagged for being in violation, please send the message along with a request for additional information or discussion to issues@chpc.utah.edu
