Slurm upgrade with service disruption on Thursday, May 1

Posted by the CHPC team

We are planning to upgrade Slurm, the job scheduler, to the latest 24.11 series release on Thursday, May 1. This upgrade will briefly affect the availability of Slurm in both the Protected Environment (redwood) and the General Environment (granite, notchpeak, kingspeak, and lonepeak). We will put reservations on the clusters as we begin the upgrade. The reservations will prevent new jobs from starting; in other words, there will be a brief window during which job submission on redwood, granite, notchpeak, kingspeak, and lonepeak will not work on May 1. We expect, however, that there will be no impact to running jobs. Once the upgrade is complete, we will remove the reservations, at which point Slurm will begin scheduling jobs again. After reviewing the change logs for the new version of Slurm, we do not expect further disruptions related to the upgrade.
